Key Concepts
There are some foundational terms and definitions central to understanding how filtration systems work. These core concepts are essential for making informed decisions in your process.
Micron Rating
The size of particles a filter can capture, measured in microns. The smaller the micron rating, the finer the filtration. Use our interactive guide for real life examples and applications.
Nominal vs. Absolute Filtration
Nominal filtration typically removes 60-98% of particles at the stated size, while absolute filtration removes 99.9%+ of particles at the rated size.
Filter Media & Types
The material or structure used to capture unwanted particles and contaminants.
- • Depth Media: Multiple layers capturing particles throughout
- • Surface Media: Single layer capturing particles on the surface
- • Membrane Media: Precise pore sizes for accurate filtration
- • Pleated Media: Increased surface area for higher flow rates
Filter Vessels & Housings
Filter media are installed within vessels—such as cartridge housings, bag filter units, or strainer assemblies—that maintain optimal flow dynamics and pressure balance. These housings protect the media and simplify maintenance while supporting efficient filtration.
